Hey there,

This is a ~2-minute read featuring News & Insights in AI for Week 5, 2025.

Updates & News - Week 5

DeepSeek - China in the AI lead?

Context

Monday last week the Chinese AI Development company called DeepSeek released it’s AI model called DeepSeek-R1. This model has caught attention for its performance and cost-effectiveness, challenging the dominance of established players like OpenAI.

Key information

  • Launch and Popularity - DeepSeek released its R1 model on January 20, 2025, which quickly became the top app on Apple's App Store, surpassing ChatGPT.

  • Reaction from the world - The quick rise in popularity has led to significant stock market reactions, affecting major U.S. tech firms.

  • Open Source and Accessibility - DeepSeek's commitment to open-source development enables widespread access and customization of its models, setting it apart from competitors that usually operate under closed systems.

What to take away from this

Just because DeepSeek is from China and is Low cost and Open Source does not mean that it is going to wipe out all other companies providing LLMs.

Should we be scared?

Not in my opinion.

The reason is because there are other world leading companies developing similar performance LLMs, which hold up strong against the DeepSeek R1 model.

OpenAI’s o3-mini drop

Context

OpenAI just launched its latest models, o3-mini and o3-mini-high, designed to handle tasks that require better reasoning.

Key Information

  • Performance Boost – These models are faster and offer stronger reasoning than o1, while keeping costs efficient.

  • Competitive Timing – With DeepSeek R1 making waves as a low-cost alternative, OpenAI is clearly positioning o3-mini as a direct response.

  • AvailabilityReleased on January 31, 2025, o3-mini is now available in ChatGPT and API, with Plus users getting 100 queries per day. Free-tier users also get access but with lower limits.

What to Take Away from This

DeepSeek’s rise is shaking things up, but OpenAI isn’t backing down. The battle for fast, capable, and cost-effective AI is only getting more intense and it shows how DeepSeek is not the end of the world.

Meta’s 2025 AI Roadmap

Context

Meta is making big moves in AI and wearables in 2025 with Llama 4, AI-powered smart glasses, and massive infrastructure investments.

Key Information

  • Llama 4 is coming with multimodal and agent-like capabilities, pushing Meta deeper into open-source AI.

  • Meta’s AI assistant is set to pass one billion users, adapting to context, culture, and preferences.

  • AI smart glasses are scaling with over a million Ray-Ban units sold in 2024. The next version, Hypernova, will feature a heads-up display and advanced AI.

What to Take Away from This

Meta is going all-in on open-source AI and wearables. The real question is whether AI glasses will take off as the next big platform.

Deep Research in ChatGPT

Context

OpenAI has launched Deep Research, an AI tool designed to handle complex, multi-step research tasks autonomously.

Key Information

  • Advanced Capabilities - Uses the upcoming o3 model to analyze online sources and generate detailed reports in 5 to 30 minutes.

  • Target Audience - Built for finance, science, policy, and engineering professionals who need structured, well-documented insights.

  • Availability - Currently in ChatGPT for Pro subscribers, with mobile and desktop expansion planned later this month.

What to Take Away from This

If you are not already using ChatGPT I’d recommend just giving it a once-off try with a paid plan. Try solving all tasks of your day-day work with ChatGPT, and you’ll save hours every week.

That was everything for Week 5, hoping that you found it valuable!
